Watering Eyes
Watering eyes is a surprisingly common problem often associated with abnormal eyelid tone or position, but can be surgically corrected at the Allclear Clinic under local anaesthetic. Occasionally some tear duct blockages may require more complex surgery under general anaesthetic, usually a day case.
Ptosis
Abnormal drooping of the upper eyelids is known as ptosis. Vision can be partially blocked by this annoying condition and in severe cases the lid may completely cover the pupil. Ptosis can be corrected under local anaesthetic.
Ectropion
The outward turning of the margin of the lower eyelid and the eyelashes is known as Ectropion and mainly occurs in older people. Other causes include eyelid tumours, trauma, eyelid scarring and previous eyelid surgery. Whilst artificial tears or lubricating ointments may be used to relieve symptoms in mild cases, surgery is generally necessary to correct the problem. The procedure is usually performed under local anaesthetic as an outpatient and involves tightening the eyelid which improves symptoms in most cases.
Entropion
Entropion is the abnormal inward turning of the upper or lower eyelid causing the eyelashes to rub against the eye and results in severe irritation, redness and pain. If it’s untreated, it can cause corneal abrasions or an eye ulcer that may threaten vision. Surgery performed under local anaesthetic as an outpatient involves rotating the lid margin to a normal position and is highly effective in most cases.
Blepharoplasty
Also known as an eyelift, blepharoplasty removes excess skin and fat in the upper eyelids and excess fat in the lower lids. Over time, the skin of the eyelid stretches, leading to a baggy or dropping appearance whilst the fat pockets become more prominent. Drooping eyelids may give the impression of being tired or appearing older. Ageing generally causes this, but sagging eyelids also runs in families. Surgery involves making tiny incisions in the skin crease of the upper lid and the removal of excess skin and fat is usually performed under local anaesthetic as an outpatient. The incisions are closed with fine sutures and scarring is usually completely unnoticeable because the incisions are hidden in the natural creases of the skin. This procedure is done for cosmetic reasons, although removal of excess upper lid skin may also improve your field of vision.
Eyebrow Lift
As the tissues of you face , including forehead and eyebrows increase in age, they may sag and droop.
Your eyes may feel fatigues and give you the appearance of being tired, even when you are well rested. Your eyebrows can be lifted with injections or surgery.
Wrinkle Reduction Injections
A variety of conditions such as facial wrinkles, eyelid spasm known as blepharospasm and hemifical spasm can be relieved with fine needle injections n the area of concern, often alleviating wrinkles for a period of up to six months.
Removal of Eyelid Cycts and Tumors
Many lumps and bumps affecting the eyelids are simple cysts caused by blockage in the ducts of various glands found in the eyelid. These cysts can be treated under local anaesthetic as a minor outpatient procedure. Occasionally cholesterol is deposited in the eyelid skin, leading to yellow patches. This may be a sign of an underlying medical condition such as high cholesterol and you should check with your GP. Eyelid tumours are rare, but serious lumps or abnormalities require careful examination and surgical removal with reconstruction of the eyelid to restore its function and appearance.
